Ashai's uncle and guardian, Slate Bennet raised her in a quiet home built around a secret about her parents. When he finally tells part of the truth, his attempt to protect her begins to cost him the trust he most wants to preserve.

Description

Slate sits at the kitchen table with untouched tea while Ashai asks what happened to her parents. He removes his glasses, tries to choose his words, and gives her enough truth to destroy the story he raised her on. Her mother did not die in an accident. Her father disappeared. The rest, he insists, is too dangerous to tell.

His fear comes from love, but Ashai is the one living inside its limits. Once she leaves for London, her silent guitar remains in the house with him. Slate can keep replaying the conversation, or follow his niece and face what his protection has cost. He has spent years trying to prevent another loss; now he has to learn how to ask for forgiveness.
