Goaden's friend Tait can see the Guardians most people cannot, but his unusually powerful soul is wearing out the body trying to contain it. Between hospital monitors and terrible jokes, he fights to keep an ordinary life with Amy—and to be heard.

Description

Before the hospital monitors, there is a picnic, a terrible fart joke and Amy noticing that Tait's hand shakes on the basket. He wants to keep those small, ordinary moments. When Tunnel Trolls stampede through the street, he still steps in front of her and tries to raise a barrier, even though his failing magic cannot hold it.

The diagnosis gives the illness a cruel shape: his soul is too powerful for his body. Tait can see Guardians, yet struggles with the daily work of being alive. Amy promises to stay; Goaden demands an enemy he can fight. Tait loves them both, but their determination does not make his pain smaller, and asking to be heard becomes its own kind of struggle.
