Kartel Hammond
Summary
An MI6 captain and one of the last alchemists, Kartel Hammond took a vow of silence after the Alchemical Society fell. His rooms hold the vials, books and remedies of a lost civilisation, each a reminder of knowledge too costly to waste.
Description
Goaden's first attempt to get a rise out of Kartel Hammond produces nothing. No answer, no explanation, no acknowledgement of the insult. Cliff supplies the reason: this is one of the last alchemists, a survivor of the war over the Philosopher's Stone, who took a vow of silence after the Alchemical Society fell.
His quarters are crowded with strange vials, old books and carved masks. Even the desk conceals a laboratory. What looks like a collection of curiosities is the working memory of a lost civilisation, and Kartel knows when a remedy is too precious to waste. He can put an irreplaceable fragment of that past into someone's hands, then insist they take only one sip a day.
Background
He was there when the Alchemical Society reached its pinnacle—buildings floating on transmuted principles, streets humming with wellbeing spells, reality bending to their understanding. He stood as guardian of the Stone, the concentrated nexus of alchemical power that made it all possible. Then came Kira. The war.
Personality
The manipulation. Factions turned against each other, consumed by greed for ultimate power. The magnificent city crumbled. His fellow alchemists—some of the brightest minds in history—perished in flames and chaos.
Role in the story
Kartel survived the fall as one of the last alchemists, carrying the memory of what his people achieved and lost. He took a vow of silence—a solemn commitment to confront the demon spirit and restore the society's honour. When Kira returns, Kartel breaks that silence to face him. He also preserves a fragment of the Philosopher's Stone as a liquid remedy, having destroyed the rest. The irreplaceable substance can slow Tait's possession, but each dose must be carefully rationed.
