Summary

Emily Grimm looks like a schoolgirl, but her father's experiments left her with a lifespan she never wanted. Behind the teddy-bear bag and garden swing is a shadow-wielding recluse whom The Order hopes to reach through a shared longing for release.

Description

Emily leaves school clutching a grey teddy-bear bag. A man who mistakes her for an easy target follows her into a peeling, ivy-covered house; by the staircase, his shadow stops obeying him. Afterwards she goes out to the garden swing. That quiet return to play is more unnerving than any threat she could make.

Her father's experiments left her with a lifespan she never asked for. She uses Fade despite its cost, hoping it will eventually exhaust the years forced upon her. When The Order sends Peris to recruit her, the offer that reaches her is neither rank nor power: Shonen Kartia may understand what it means to want an immortal life to end. Emily can terrify a neighbourhood, yet loneliness is what gives the visitor a chance.
