Kai

Creature Guardian

Summary

Kai is Goaden's dragon guardian and the source of the silver flames he channels through Vega. Usually small enough to sleep on a shoulder, he has the exhausting job of teaching his formidable companion that strength also includes restraint.

Description

Kai can sleep through a Streamliner ride with his warmth seeping into Goaden's shoulder and sparks flicking from his tail. Waking to another violent altercation is less restful. His obsidian-and-ivory scales, tiny fangs and soft purrs make a gentle first impression; the silver fire he lends through Vega is another matter.

He is more than a source of flame. Outside Tait's hospital room, Kai asks Goaden to listen to a friend whose suffering he cannot punch away. Elsewhere, he and Greah slip off to investigate London's failing magical grid, following its disturbances underground and leading Tunnel Trolls away from a cathedral. He argues for control, then demonstrates what it can accomplish.
