Flicker

Summary

Flicker is short-range teleportation: the user vanishes from one spot and reappears at another in an instant, one body and never a copy. Nameless makes it look effortless in a fight; Goaden's attempts reveal both the danger of getting it wrong and the magical barriers it cannot cross.

Description

An opponent who can Flicker is a problem that refuses to stay in front of you. Nameless uses the technique so readily that Goaden struggles to land a decisive blow, while Kai recognises that apparent ease as a warning of serious power.

Trying it yourself is another matter. Goaden worries that imperfect control could send him somewhere disastrous, and later discovers that even a successful Flicker cannot carry him through every magical boundary. It offers a way across a battlefield, not a promise that every prison has an exit.

Background

Flicker is an art of spatial manipulation enveloped in mystery and cunning origins. Legend tells of a mortal who outsmarted a demon, tricking it into revealing the secrets of instantaneous teleportation. Enraged by such deception, the demon cursed the human to flicker uncontrollably through time and space for eternity. Yet through resilience and determination, the mortal transformed this curse into mastery, bending the chaotic flickering to his will. The technique spread from this single origin point, passed through generations of masters and students who dared delve into its mysteries. Flicker demands a complex interplay of spatial awareness, mental acuity, and ethereal energy—the practitioner must envision their destination, harness the energy, and seamlessly transition in the blink of an eye. Despite its widespread adoption, Flicker remains perilous. A miscalculation can trap the user in non-existence or merge them with inanimate objects. Many who attempted mastery without proper guidance have met fates worse than death, lost forever to the void or bound eternally to the liminal spaces between realities.
